International consortium wins $228m Swedish rail contract

A consortium made up of Swedish construction company NCC and Spanish contractor Obrascón Huarte Lain (OHL) are to construct a section of railway between Lund and Arlöv in SkÃ¥ne, southern Sweden.

The $228m contract was awarded by the Swedish Transport Administration with an optional extension valued at an additional $114m.

Four tracks will be constructed between Flackarp and Arlöv. The railway will be lowered into a 5km-long cutting for part of the section and decked over when it passes through the community of Ã…karp. Another  section may be built between Lund and Flackarp.

Two temporary tracks will be built to allow services to continue during the project period. Svante Hagman, business area manager at NCC Infrastructure, said: "This is one of the busiest railway lines in Sweden and minimising disruption during the construction period is crucial, not just for rail passengers but also for road and pedestrian traffic in the area.

"NCC has extensive experience of implementing complex projects in the midst of continuing operations and our full project responsibility equips us with an overview of all parts of the project".

Construction is planned to start in July 2017 and is expected to be completed in December 2023.

If the extension is carried out the project will be completed towards the end of 2024.
