Italian firm chosen for new Reem Island shopping mall, Abu Dhabi

A 50-50 joint venture between Italian construction firm Itinera and local company Ghantoot Group will build the 600,000-sq-m Reem Mall on Reem Island, part of the Abu Dhabi archipelago.

The $1bn Mall will include 260,000 sq m of retail space with 450 shops, parking for almost 7,000 vehicles, a 10,000-sq-m Snow Park and other restaurants and attractions.

The project includes the construction of the Mall’s 1km perimeter road along with 11 flyovers and overhead pedestrian access.

UK consultant Mace won a contract to project manage the Reem Mall in 2015.

The $620m contract was awarded by Al Farwaniya Property Developments, a partnership between three Kuwaiti firms: Agility, Agility affiliate United Projects for Aviation Services Company (UPAC), and National Real Estate Company (NREC).

The project will be located in the Najmat District on Reem Island, a residential and commercial master development by Reem Developers which is part of a larger real-estate plan involving the construction of homes, offices and hotels.

Shane Eldstrom, chief executive of Al Farwaniya Property Developments, said: "We are continuing to steadily progress towards the delivery of Abu Dhabi’s new lifestyle, retail and entertainment destination.

"We are very excited about working with Itinera Ghantoot JV for the main construction of Reem Mall and are confident that they will maintain the highest quality of work throughout the construction process and deliver a mall that Abu Dhabi, and the wider UAE, can be truly proud of."
