Japan lifts Tanzanian economy with two flyovers

11 July 2013

Japan has agreed to finance the construction of two flyovers in Tanzania’s capital, Dar es Salaam, as part of an ongoing aid commitment.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will disburse nearly $15m, $11m of which will go towards alleviating traffic jams in Dar es Salaam.

"Completion of the city road project will ease congestion to reactivate economic activities," said Prof Mpango, executive secretary of the city’s planning commission.

The remaining amount will be provided as a concessional loan to support poverty alleviation strategies.

Japan pledged a commitment to implement various infrastructure projects in Tanzania following a meeting between Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe in May during the Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development.
