CIMIC Group construction company Leighton Contractors has been selected by the New Zealand Transport Agency to design and construct the Southern Corridor Improvements (SCI) project on State Highway 1 (SH1) in Auckland, New Zealand.

The project will generate approximately US$126m to Leighton Contractors over the next three years.

Leighton will build approximately 11km of additional lanes, upgrade 16 existing bridges and build six new bridges.

CIMIC Group Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marcelino Fernández Verdes said: "The SCI project targets a critical link in New Zealand’s transport network to serve a growing population and support economic growth."

Work will begin in October and is expected to be complete in 2018.
