London police investigate body discovered in Canary Wharf building site

The body of a man has found in a trench on a building site in London’s Canary Wharf financial district. The find was made by construction employees returning to work after the Christmas break, and it was not clear how long the body had been lying there.

Police are trying to identify the man, and how he came to be killed, although the death is being treated as unexplained, rather than suspicious.

A Metropolitan police spokesperson said: "Officers were called on Tuesday, 2 January at 8.46am to a construction site in Bank Street, Westferry Road.

"The body of a man had been found after apparently falling into a deep trench at the location. The London ambulance service and London fire brigade attended the scene.

"The man was pronounced dead at the scene, his body has not yet been recovered. He is not thought to have been a member of construction staff."

A London ambulance service spokesperson said the man appeared to have fallen 50ft into the trench.
