Mace wins Renzo Piano’s £825m Paddington ‘Cube’

Construction Manager reports that Mace has won the role of main contractor on the £825m Paddington Square development in London, to build 430,000 sq ft of offices, retail outlets and restaurants designed by Renzo Piano.

Dubbed the ‘Cube’, the project includes a 19-storey office building with a 13,650 sq ft rooftop restaurant. Mace is understood to have beaten Sir Robert McAlpine and Multiplex to win the deal.

The scheme is being developed by Sellar on behalf of owners Great Western Developments.

Sellar construction director Paul Flexney-Briscoe said: "This has been an incredibly intense period as we have reviewed exceptional bids from three tier one contractors and I have to pay credit to their enthusiasm for, and commitment to, the project.

"We have decided to move forward on the first stage of the contract for Paddington Square with Mace.

"The other key contract relates to the piling and substructure works at Paddington Square, which we describe as the basement box contract. We are currently reviewing tenders from Erith, Keltbray, J Coffey and Getjar for this and we expect to appoint the contractor by the beginning of February."

Piling work is expected to start in March. The entire development is due to be completed by February 2022.
