Edmonton shortlists three heavyweight teams for $1.9bn light rail extension

The City of Edmonton in western Canada has shortlisted three teams for the next stage of Valley Line West, its US$1.9bn public-private light rail scheme.

The three teams in the running for the 14km extension of the city’s existing network are as follows:

  • Spain’s ACS and its Flatiron, Dragados and Hochtief subsidiaries, plus Canada’s Aecon
  • Urban Mobility Partners, comprising France’s Eurovia Infra with Canada’s Carmacks Enterprises, I&S Mobility May and Rail Cantech. It also contains US investor Graham Capital Partners and US engineer Parsons
  • The WestLINK Group, composed of subsidiaries of Canada’s SNC-Lavalin.

Bruce Ferguson, Edmonton LRT expansion manager, said in a press release: "We’re excited the Valley Line West LRT has reached this procurement milestone and that we are another step closer to building this transformational project for our city.

"We look forward to working with each of the shortlisted teams over the next year to find a project contractor who can meet the rigorous technical and financial requirements of this project."

Valley Line West will run from downtown Edmonton to Lewis Farms. The procurement process began in March with a request for qualifications. The preferred team is expected to be announced in 2020 with construction to begin shortly afterward. The line is expected to be in operation by 2027.
