Work has started on the new British High Commission offices at its existing site in Nicosia, Cyprus’ capital, with Cypriot company Atlas Pantou acting as main contractor.
The Commission described it as a “€40 million-plus” project, and the biggest current project on the UK’s diplomatic estate.
Located on a historic site once part of the Central Prisons compound, the new facility will have an office building, security facility and residence for the high commissioner, all set to be carbon-neutral.
The existing buildings will continue to operate until the new ones are ready. Temporary access points will be created and services will continue uninterrupted.
Michael Tatham, Britain’s high commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus, said: “Any new construction represents change and a departure from the past. We see this as a massive upgrade, reflecting the value that the UK attaches to its strong partnership with the Republic of Cyprus.
“We are looking forward to seeing a new High Commission take shape – and to inviting our many Cypriot friends and partners to see it soon.”
The new headquarters is due to be completed by November 2028.
