Miami International Airport (MIA) says it will start on a $1bn expansion of its Concourse D in 2027.
The project will convert the existing Gate D60 area into a three-storey structure with 17 gates able to accommodate larger regional and narrow-body aircraft, each with individual passenger hold rooms and links to the airport’s US Customs and Border Protection facility.
It will also contain additional dining and shopping options, plus an enhanced baggage handling system.
Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade’s county mayor, said: “The D60 expansion is one of the most monumental customer service improvements within our unprecedented airport-wide modernisation plan.
“MIA ranks among the fastest-growing global hubs since the pandemic, and the North Terminal expansion, coupled with South Terminal’s future Concourse K and the Central Terminal redevelopment, will create a new future-ready gateway fully enabled to serve our millions of visitors for decades to come.”

A contractor and architect are yet to be named for the development. A previous expansion of Concourse D was undertaken by a team of MCM Construction Management and Harper Partners.
The project is touted to meet LEED silver and envision verified certifications.
The Gate D60 expansion is due to be completed by 2030.
