A recently completed highway in Morocco has been renamed in honour of the sitting US president after Morocco was granted sovereignty over the previously disputed Western Sahara in 2020, following Morocco normalising relations with Israel.
Al Jazeera notes that the 1,055km-long road, previously named the Tiznit-Dakhla highway, opened in January this year following a decade-long construction effort.
Now called the Donald J. Trump Highway, it hugs Morocco’s Atlantic coast, running south from Tiznit through Western Sahara down to Dakhla.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI claims the project is Africa’s “longest road infrastructure”.
Mohammed VI said the highway “unifies our country, in much the same way your leadership has brought our two nations closer to each other in unprecedented ways”.
The Donald J. Trump Highway will form part of Morocco’s larger Royal Vision project, which aims to bolster Africa’s Atlantic coast.
Since the US recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, Israel and Paraguay have followed.
In June 2026, the UN issued a press release stating that its Special Committee on Decolonisation was divided over the future of the territory.
An op-ed in the Washington Post in 2020 by former US secretary of state James A. Baker III claimed that Trump’s support of Morocco was an “astounding retreat from the principles of international law and diplomacy”.
