Atkins turns abandoned Chinese quarry into $490m luxury hotel

4 July 2013

Construction of a luxury hotel designed by British designer Atkins has begun in an abandoned flooded Chinese quarry that will eventually be a large theme park.

The $490m Shimao Wonderland InterContinental cave hotel will be located in China’s Songjiang District near Shanghai and will include two underwater floors and 17 rooms integrated into the quarry’s cave.

Due to open in 2016, the structure will also boast an eco-friendly green roof and integrated photovoltaic solar panels.

"The roof of the hotel will only be 15m above the cave. The idea was to take advantage of this unique landform and to create a garden growing in the air," explained Li Xuyang, a senior manager for Shimao Group.
