China starts on Cambodia’s longest road

China’s Shanghai Construction Group has begun extending and widening Cambodia’s longest road in a project hailed by the Cambodian government as vital for tourism and development.

Breaking ground on 5 March, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said the 248km stretch of national road No. 6A would connect the capital Phnom Penh to tourism hotspots and the Thai border, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The $248m project is expected to be finished in 42 months.

Xinhua quoted the prime minister thanking China, saying more than 2,000km of roads had been built to date with Chinese aid.
