Chinese firm gets nod to build Canadian windfarm

19 July 2013

A Chinese company will build a 100MW wind farm in Ontario, Canada.

The Ontario Power Authority has granted a construction permit to China Longyuan Power to build the Longyuan Canada windfarm, which will supply 30,000 homes, according to the company. China Longyuan Power claims it is the first time a Chinese state-owned power company has invested in an overseas new energy project.

It is the first taste of the global wind power market for Longyuan, who began bidding for the deal under Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff scheme in 2011.

To speed construction, the company has already sought bids for EPC construction, acquired land, secured financing and consulted with local communities.

It hopes to begin construction in August, with commercial operation set for early 2014.
