CIOB survey seeks insights on client leadership in the pandemic

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has launched a survey of members employed by construction clients to understand their concerns and how Covid-19 is affecting them.

The aim is to motivate construction clients to act together to mitigate the effect of of the pandemic on the industry.

The initiative is led by Gren Tipper, operations director at the Construction Clients’ Leadership Group (CCLG), which has joined forces with the CIOB to encourage international client leadership in the industry.

“The impact of Covid-19 now dominates the focus of the group and has quickly led to the formation of a Covid-19 client working group,” Tipper explains.

“The aim is to help the construction industry better respond to the issues raised by the pandemic – and to get that key insight from clients to support the critical working relationships between contractor and clients.”

The group is currently focusing on three main areas:

  • The impact of covid-19 on construction
  • Reaching and supporting the client community
  • International collaboration

“We all know that clients are unequally positioned to demonstrate leadership and facilitate change; the challenge is getting them to act in unison in key strategic areas,” said Tipper.

“The CIOB wants to engage client members to understand their needs, both professionally and the support required for their businesses. We aim to more fully connect with small and micro suppliers – the engine room of our industry – where clients are able to bring about much-needed improvements in commercial and contractual relationships, giving a better platform for quality outcomes in all key areas.

“Now we are at the point where we need your help. Specifically, we want to understand how many CIOB members are employed by clients along with some background information on their roles and any work they do in support of the industry. This short survey will help us gain the insight we need to build a more collaborative experience.”
