Construction has been completed on Herzog & de Meuron’s "M+" visual arts museum, located on reclaimed land in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District.
The 65,000 sq m building contains 17,000 sq m of exhibition space across 33 galleries, as well as three cinemas, a médiathèque, a research centre, shops, restaurants and a roof garden with views over Victoria Harbou
It is clad in a dark green glazed ceramic facade enlivened by integrated LED screens that display message to the public. A lightwell, formed by skylights and cuts in the floor plates, brings daylighting to the lower floors.
The site is built around an underground railway tunnel housing the Airport Express. During the excavation, a "found space" was discovered, which will be used for large-scale installations.
