Costa Rica hopes surfing centre will make it global leader in the sport

The Costa Rican Surf Association (ACOS) is planning to begin work on a "High-Performance Centre for Surfing" by the end of the year.

The project, funded by a group of private investors, will provide surfers with a gym, skate ramps, leg strengthening machines and a swimming pool, among other facilities.

A site has been chosen in Garabito de Puntarenas on the country’s Pacific coast.

Víctor Arce, president of ACOS, said the centre would be a "very large project", and when complete, in the middle of next year, would prepare future generations of professional surfers in Costa Rica.

He said: "Our country has waves 365 days a year, which makes it an ideal place to practice this discipline. We want to do it privately, having the human material, accessories and part of the investment for the infrastructure."

Costa Rica is one of the world’s top 10 surfing destinations, according to National Geographic magazine, and is hoping to become the world’s number one destination after the abatement of the Covid-19 pandemic.
