Dutch construction vehicle maker Riwal is using its equipment to reunite families separated by the coronavirus pandemic.
On 18 March, the Dutch government closed nursing homes to visitors in an attempt to stem the spread of Covid-19. A man called Cor de Graag, who wanted to visit his mother in a nursing home in Dordrecht, contacted Riwal to ask if it could help him.
A Riwal employee undertook a risk analysis to determine if a scissor lift platform could elevate a visitor while keeping them 1.5m away from their host.
Since the inaugural visit, Riwal has helped other people to visit relatives in nine nursing homes in the Netherlands.
Glenn Verburg, Riwal Benelux’s manager, said: "At Riwal, we were already thinking about how we could help people efficiently and safely in these times.
"Mr de Graag’s request came at exactly the right time. We are pleased that we can provide some relief during this time and have already been approached by various care homes. We are open to these requests, but only if we can guarantee the safety of all involved. That is our highest priority."
