Ed Züblin and Max Bögl win €500m Stuttgart railway project

Two German contractors have been awarded a €500m contract to build a 5.3km section of a rail line between Stuttgart and Ulm in the southwest of the country.

Ed Züblin and the Max Bögl Group were awarded the contract for section 1.3a of the new line, which includes a station beneath Stuttgart airport, and a 2.1km airport tunnel. They will begin work in January next year.

The station will have a length of 400m and will be built by conventional tunnelling. The earthworks and roadworks for this part of the project will be performed by Austrian contractor Strabag.

The Stuttgart to Ulm line will cut the travel time between the two cities from one hour to 30 minutes. Most of the tunnelling work on the €3.7bn, 61km line between Ulm and Wendlingen, a town about 10km southeast of Stuttgart, has been completed. A ceremony was held this week to mark the completion of the 8km Albvorland tunnel outside Wendlingen (pictured), which was carried out by Swiss company Implenia.

The link between Stuttgart and Ulm, with the showpiece of the Stuttgart underground station, is due to be complete in 2025.

Ed Züblin, which has about 14,000 employees and an annual output of about €4bn, is a subsidiary of Strabag. Max Bögl has around 6,500 employees and a turnover of about €1.7bn euros.
