An Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight from Addis Ababa to Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport in Zambia took a wrong turn on Sunday and landed at the as yet unfinished Copperbelt International Airport in Zambia.
Ethiopian Airlines said in a statement that a "notam notice", which is filed with aviation authorities and indicates flight routes, was not issued for the aircraft, and said it presumed that this had caused the misdirection.
The two airports are located only 22km from each other, which added to the confusion.
Flight number ET 3891 nevertheless landed safely, before making its way to Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport.
Construction of Copperbelt International Airport has been delayed by Covid-19, but when completed it will replace Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe.
