Spanish construction and engineering giant FCC has landed two new contracts in Peru totalling $260m to modernise the largest port in the country and upgrade a sports complex which will host the 2013 Bolivarian Games.
Callao Port, one of South America’s biggest Pacific ports, handles nearly two million containers annually and will have sections of its infrastructure overhauled in order to adapt to cargo transport demand and ship sizes.
The 23-month contract entails modernising two piers and outfitting the port with better equipment to deal with different types of cargo.
The works, worth $218m, are part of an ambitious $1bn investment plan until 2020 and have been commissioned by Maersk Group subsidiary APM Terminals, which is the world’s fourth-largest port operator.

FCC’s second contract is for the Trujillo sports complex (also known as the Chicago sports complex) and involves the construction of an athletics stadium, indoor arena and additional infrastructure giving a total floorspace of almost 24,000-sq-m.
Chile, Spain and Mexico will join Bolivarian countries this November at Trujillo, in northeast Peru, to participate in the rhythmic and artistic gymnastics section of the Bolivarian Games, a multi-sport event held every four years.
Over $42m will be spent renovating the sports complex which will include a promenade with central gardens connecting the arena and stadium to a general services building.
FCC has contracts in Latin America worth over £3bn and last year posted turnover of over £11bn, 56% of which came from international markets.
The company employs over 80,000 people worldwide.
