Greek construction company J&P-AVAX has won a contract from Aldar Properties to develop a second Marina on Yas Island near Abu Dhabi.

The contract, worth around $161m is being carried out over a 28-month period by its subsidiary firm, Athena SA.

It will build a new vertical quay wall, shore protection, a boat launch slipway and a floating pontoon system as part of the marine works. It will also carry out infrastructure works including excavation and earth-moving, roadworks, water and drainage networks, pumping systems, and utilities connections.

In a statement J&P-AVAX said the new contract extends Athena’s "long involvement" with the Gulf.

It also revealed that it had recently won a $38.9m contract from the consortium building the UAE’s first nuclear plant to carry out marine-related works, involving revetment works for the intake channel, the installation of a quay wall, shore protection works and the installation of necessary marine equipment.

The company said that works for the 20-month project are already under way.

"Athena continues the construction of other projects, mostly marine, in the Emirates of Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi, and stands a good chance of winning several more projects bid for," it added.
