US engineer Jacobs has been chosen as a consultant on a $24bn high-speed railway to be built between the Swedish cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
The contract was awarded by Trafikverket, the agency that runs the country’s public transport systems. Jacobs will provide the project with technical advice, planning, design and delivery of the line.
The new service will be built in three phases: a 150km link between Järna and Linköping, a 60km section between Gothenburg and BorÃ¥s and a 70km section between Hässleholm and Lund. Jacobs will work on all three.
Donald Morrison, a senior vice president of the company commented: "Sweden’s vision for a new generation railway is an exciting opportunity to provide cleaner, faster transport capacity and connectivity in the regions, and stimulate economic development."
Peter Uneklint, Trafikverket’s programme director added that the new system would relieve overcrowding on Sweden’s rail network, and that he was "looking forward to applying Jacobs’ global experience in high-speed rail to support us in finding the right solutions for Sweden".
In 2018, Jacobs was selected by Etihad Rail for technical and programme consulting services for the delayed 900km freight-and-passenger rail network in the UAE.
