Japan to build $270m “heavy load” data centres

Kddi, a Japanese telecommunications operator, is to open two "telehouse" data centres in Tokyo and Osaka. The project has a budget of $270m. 

The facilities will offer high-density co-location services that will enable the hosting of heavy-load IT infrastructure.  

The data centres will meet the growing demand for private enterprise cloud storage, along with public cloud service providers and media content companies. 

The centres are designed to be proof against earthquakes owing to their shock absorbent structures. 

Kddi will be working with Telehouse, a data centre provider that manages and operates 46 carrier-neutral server farms worldwide.

Telehouse Tokyo Tama 3

The "Telehouse Osaka 2" development will be based in Osaka city, and can be used as a disaster recovery and back-up site for the Tokyo data centres. The technical and operations room in the facility will be situated above the second floor to avoid the risk of flooding. 

The "Telehouse Tokyo Tama 3" project will be located on the existing Tama data centre campus, outside Tokyo. It will be one of the most energy efficient in Japan. 

The Osaka facility is due to open in August 2015, while the centre in Tokyo is scheduled for February 2016.
