Japan’s tallest tower to be shaped like torch

Plans have been unveiled for Japan’s tallest tower, the 390m Torch Tower in Tokyo.

Designed by Sou Fujimoto, Mitsubishi Estate Company and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, the 63-storey building will take the crown from the 300m-tall Abeno Harukas structure in Osaka.

According to Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, the Torch Tower will have 544,000 sq m of floor area and contain offices, commercial facilities, hotels, and cultural and sports facilities.

Sou Fujimoto commented on Instagram that the building would not be a mere "object" but a "place for people".

The tower is due to be completed in 2027.
