Laing O’Rourke appoints Buro Happold chief technical director

Laing O’Rourke announced yesterday that the engineer who helped design the 2012 Olympic stadium will become its group technical director.

Paul Westbury was previously the chief executive of consulting engineer Buro Happold, where he worked 23 years.

During his time at Buro Happold, the 44-year-old engineer was also involved with the Millennium Dome and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in north London. He was awarded a CBE in 2013 for services to engineering and construction.

Anna Stewart, the group chief executive of Laing O’Rourke, said: "We are delighted that Paul has agreed to join us and lead the next stage of Laing O’Rourke’s engineering development. He has a global reputation in the design and delivery of multi-award-winning buildings and infrastructure, and his appointment marks a step change in our engineering ambitions."

Westbury said: "This new role will enable me to continue to be an ambassador for engineering globally, raising its profile as a leader in providing solutions for many of the major life-changing issues that society is facing today and in the future."
