Leighton joint venture wins $760m Hong Kong metro deal

A joint venture between Hochtief subsidiary Leighton Asia and China State Construction Engineering has been awarded a $760m contract to build an underground station and tunnel section for the extension of the Hong Kong metro to the New Territories. The client for the work is the MTR Corporation, the body that manages Hong Kong’s rail system.

Exhibition Station, as it will be called, will serve the Hong Kong Convention Centre and the North Wanchai area. The associated tunnel will run for 300m, and will complete the link.

Leighton Asia has a 51% share in the joint venture.

Marcelino Fernández Verdes, Leighton’s executive chairman, said: "Securing the largest civil works contract within this project is an excellent achievement and is reflective of Leighton’s experience in delivering transport projects of this size in busy urban areas.

"Demand from growing populations and the need to address infrastructure deficits are resulting in continued growth in infrastructure investment in Asia."

Manuel Alvarez Munoz, Leighton Asia’s managing director, said: "Leighton has developed a strong working relationship with both our joint venture partner China State and with MTR Corporation. These relationships will contribute to the successful delivery of this high-profile project."
