Light-emitting concrete starts beaming in Germany

The world’s first façade featuring light-emitting concrete panels has been unveiled at RWTH Aachen University by German concrete manufacturer Lucem.

The wall features 136 rectangular concrete panels containing optical fibres.

The LED-panels are controlled by the internet or mobile device, and text and logos can be displayed on the screen, reports World Architecture News.

Lucem believes the opportunities for light-emitting concrete include facades, interior walls, claddings and flooring systems. It says any internal or external wall could be transformed into a display, creating opportunities for advertising and communication without adding flat screen televisions or billboards.
