New York’s LGBTQ+ Museum finds permanent home

Robert AM Stern Architects has been selected to create a permanent home for the American LGBTQ+ Museum, New York’s first dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture.

The 70,000 sq ft building will be located at the New York Historical Society in Central Park West and will contain classrooms, galleries, study areas and a storage facility for the Patricia Klingenstein Library.

The museum has been approved unanimously by the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the New York Historical Society.

The lot where the expansion will be located was originally purchased in 1937 according to Louise Mirrer, New York Historical’s president.

She said: "How gratifying it is to realise the dream of telling the American story in all its complexity in state-of-the-art educational spaces and a brand new gallery dedicated to the struggle for civil rights of the American LGBTQ+ community.

"Thanks to a generous gift by our longest-serving trustee, Patricia Klingenstein, our priceless library collection will now be housed in optimal conditions within the new building’s foundation."

Richard Burns, the LGBTQ+ museum’s chair, said: "The respect and rigour with which New York Historical has approached this process, including their consultation with local communities, mirrors our own commitment to building a thoughtful, welcoming, queer, and inclusive experience for our visitors and partners."
