Ramboll and WSP to link Finland’s two biggest cities

Consultant engineers Ramboll and WSP are to build a light rail link between Finland’s most populated cities Helsinki and Espoo.

The 25km dual-track line will link the Keilaniemi district in Espoo and the Itäkeskus region of Helsinki.

The Raide-Jokeri link will contain 32 stations and is expected to accommodate up to 100,000 passengers every weekday by 2040.

The railway will partially replace the Bussi-Jokeri, a Helsinki bus service with 30,000 daily commuters.

Pekka Kuorikoski, Ramboll’s project manager, said: "This vital cross-region service requires a rail link with a higher capacity and a higher service level.

"Raide-Jokeri will also significantly influence land use in the vicinity of the track in the near future, and this is in scope for the project plan as well."

The Raide-Jokeri line is expected to be completed in the early 2020s.

Ramboll recently acquired the US consultancy Environ.
