Strabag begins work on 62km motorway contract worth €700m

Austrian contractor Strabag and German company Leonhard Weiss have won a public-private partnership contract worth €700m for the construction of a 31km section of Germany’s A49 motorway.

The project between Schwalmstadt and the Ohmtal interchange in northern and central Hesse will close the gap with the A5 highway.

The scope includes the design, maintenance and operation of a 62km section of the motorway between the Fritzlar junction and the Ohmtal A5/A49 interchange.

Thomas Birtel, Strabag SE’s chief executive, said: "We are pleased about the renewed trust in our ability to successfully realise large infrastructure projects in public-private partnerships, something we are already demonstrating in Germany with the A8 and A5 motorways."

Major construction works on the project are due to be completed in autumn 2024.
