Some 65% of developers of seniors’ housing schemes in the US have postponed projects because of the coronavirus pandemic, and 40% have canceled projects altogether, according to a survey.
Overall, 70% of respondents with development pipelines reported having projects postponed by Covid-19, reports Senior Housing News (SHN), which surveyed operators and developers in October with architecture firm LWDA, getting 185 responses.
Among those who canceled or postponed projects, 43% cited the need to preserve liquidity as the pandemic continues, and 23% cited a lack of financing.
Another 34% said they stopped projects because of Covid-19 guidelines.
The pandemic has also prompted most developers and operators to go back to the drawing board with architects to incorporate new safety and sanitation protocols in their planned buildings.
Social distancing measures and HVAC are common focuses for change.
More than half of respondents had committed extra resources to develop outdoor spaces. Larger floor plans are also being sought.
