Vinci-led consortium wins another slice of Auckland’s €2.6bn City Rail Link

The Link Alliance consortium, led by Vinci Construction, has won two contracts worth a total of €485m on Auckland’s City Rail Link.
The two deals involve connecting the line to the city’s existing network, which will involve laying around 2km of track, and the installation of overhead lines, signalling and the control system for the entire City Rail Link.
At a total cost of some €2.6bn, the City Rail Link project will double the number of people able to reach Auckland’s city centre within 30 minutes.Â
The new line is designed to carry 54,000 people an hour during peak hours, which Vinci said was the equivalent capacity of two motorways with four lanes in each direction.
As well as Vinci, the Link Alliance includes Soletanche Bachy International of France, ASX-listed Downer, US engineer Aecom, Canadian engineer WSP-Opus and local consulting engineer Tonkin & Taylor.
These awards follow the award to the consortium of a design-and-build contract in July 2019 (see further reading). This covered the main building work of the 3.4km line extension, including a 3.2km of tunnel and three stations.Â
Altogether, the line will cost €2.6bn, making it the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand.
The contracts are of the Alliance type, which combines the consortium and the client – City Rail Link Limited – into a single team to undertake the project.Â
Delivery of all three packages is scheduled for 2024, at which time the line will be able to accommodate 54,000 passengers an hour during peak hours, or the equivalent capacity of two motorways with four lanes in each direction.
