Vinci team named preferred bidder for €600m Czech motorway

A 50:50 joint venture of Vinci and Meridiam was named preferred bidder today for the public-private partnership (PPP) contract to finance, design, build and operate the 49km D4 motorway from Příbram in Central Bohemia to Písek in South Bohemia.

The first PPP motorway contract ever awarded by the Czech Republic, it sees Vinci building 32km of new road and converting 17km of existing road into a dual two-lane carriageway to boost connectivity between rural South Bohemia and Prague and ease traffic on the country’s major routes to Germany and Austria.

The contract awarded by the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Transport is for 28 years, including approximately four years for construction work, and represents an investment of some €600m (CZK 16.5 billion), Vinci said.

Design and construction will be carried out by Eurovia CS, a Czech subsidiary of Vinci.

As well as being the first motorway PPP in the country, it will be the first motorway built there using a full BIM approach.

Vinci said it would have state-of-the-art technologies to boost safety and traffic flow, and will incorporate environment-friendly innovations.

The contractor will recycle up to 1.9 million cubic metres of excavated materials, and will aim to recycle up to 60% of the total volume of asphalt mix.

Storm water retention ponds, wildlife crossings and a zero pesticide commitment will help preserve biodiversity.
