Norway awards $40m contract for Arctic port facility

A new port terminal will be built in the Norwegian city of Tromsø, above the Arctic Circle.

Björn Bygg, a subsidiary of Norwegian civil engineer Peab, has been awarded the $40m contract by port operator Tromsø Havn.

The 12,000 square meter facility will include a freight and passenger terminal, offices, a bus station, restaurants and an arrival hall for Hurtigruten, a daily passenger and freight shipping service.

The port currently has about 1.4 million passengers a year, a figure that is expected to double when the terminal is built.

Arild Østgård, the chief executive of Bjorn Bygg, said: "We want to be an important community builder in Tromsø and this project is really something that develops the community.

"We know that a new terminal is awaited by residents, tourists and the business community."

Construction will start in April this year and the terminal is expected to open in February 2018.
