We must challenge preconceived ideas and set a compelling vision for the future

Even in these difficult times we must be optimistic about the future.

Yes, we need to address the various challenges Covid-19 has thrown at us, and we need to empathise with all members of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) who have hit hard times.

But we also need to have an eye for the future and play our role in shaping it; encouraging the voices of our younger members to be heard.

I want to use my presidency to give a stronger voice to the next generation within the CIOB and for us together to create a culture at CIOB that is welcoming to everyone starting out in their careers.

This is why I am excited to tell you about an initiative I am launching called the CIOB 2030 Visionary Project, and it’s why I urge you to take part.

In short, the CIOB must challenge preconceived ideas, set a compelling vision for our industry that considers new skills, new processes and develop strategies around emerging technologies.

This will ensure the CIOB stays at the vanguard of construction in a future that reflects the global needs of the next wave of talent and younger members.

Our objective for this initiative is to develop a 2030 global vision that is embraced by Trustees and the 2021 Members Forum.

It will act as a briefing document for 2023 and subsequent CIOB Corporate Plans.

Through this vision we will identify future scenarios in our built environment, to understand their impact and to pursue changes to the CIOB that makes the experience younger people have with the Institute more inclusive and attractive.

We can’t do this alone and there will be opportunity for many of our members to get involved.

Representatives from the CIOB Novus network, our special interest groups, and colleagues at the CIOB will all be part of the mix too.

I invite you to reach out to CIOB staff in your local hub, or Novus representative, to register your interest in taking part.

As an industry, and an Institute, we will come through this horrible pandemic and with vision, energy and determination we can and will shape a better tomorrow.
