Ramboll, BIG and MVRDV land roles on $542m mixed-use project in Abu Dhabi

Danish engineer Ramboll has been hired as the lead consultant for $542m mixed-use project in Abu Dhabi.

It will work alongside Dutch architect MVRDV and Danish firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

The client for the project is Imkan Properties, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Capital Group.

The development is called the Makers District, an 18ha waterfront community containing 1,000 residential units, and 11,000 sq m of commercial and retail space.

The project is located on Reem Island, 600m off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

Walid El Hindi, the chief executive of Imkan, said: "Makers District is the first development of its kind in the region. We conducted extensive research on the needs and aspirations of young, highly networked and creative workers who currently have a limited choice in where they live and work.

"Makers District is a community that fills this gap by responding to the rise of the maker movement – a social movement with an artisan spirit. With a vibrant hub, it will become the new beating heart of Abu Dhabi and will herald a new type of real estate development that will benefit end-users, investors and the wider community."

The project is due to be completed in 2020.
