The consortium building a 7.8km extension of Toronto’s Line 2 subway – Aecon and FCC Canada – have picked Spanish engineering and technology group Sener to develop its detailed design.
Developed by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario, the new line will extend Line 2 further into Scarborough east of downtown Toronto, and will have three stations connected to bus terminals.
Sener will develop detailed designs for the architecture, structures, electromechanical and other installations, and will also be responsible for integrating all systems.
The project also includes renovating one station and building eight new emergency exits and four electrical substations.
Sener is lead engineer in the implementation phase of the contract for stations, track, and systems.
52,000 new users
The company said 105,000 commuters would use the extension every day, 52,000 of them new subway users.
The line is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 10,000 tons a year.
It’s being procured under a “progressive design-build” model, which encourages early collaboration between owner, contractor, and the public.
Sener said such early collaboration in this case helped the consortium win the contract.
Also in Toronto, Sener has participated in the Finch West LRT, the Ontario Metro Line, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, and the ongoing GO Train network rehabilitation and expansion.
