Shakespeare’s Globe set to undergo dramatic adaptation in Detroit

A team of American entrepreneurs is hoping to build a reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre made from shipping containers in Detroit, Michigan.

The "Container Globe" would stack suitably adapted 20ft-long containers on top of each other to provide walls and seating, as well as the stage, stairwells and backstage area.

A transparent coating would protect the structure from the elements and allow the building to glow from within at night.

This adaption of the theatre on London’s South Bank, itself the recreation of an original that burned down in 1613, could be moved and reassembled, and would be a low-cost alternative to brick-and-mortar theatres.

If the scheme is successful, the Container Globe would be erected with the help of Arup’s New York office, which will provide environmental performance studies.

The project has so far been funded by its founder, Angus Vail, but a Kickstarter project will be launched in 2017 to raise $6m for the project.
