SOM plan new urban district to “knit together” Philadelphia

US architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has unveiled plans for a 175 acre mixed-use urban district in the northeastern US city of Philadelphia.

The 30th Street Station Precinct will use a transit hub to "knit together Centre City and University City, the two downtown districts powering Philadelphia", and cater to 30,000 passengers each morning. The hub brings together the city’s subway and its overground rail system.

As well as adding to the city’s infrastructure, the project is intended to be an "iconic destination", filled with places to shop, meet, and eat.

In addition, the architect said, an improved passenger, driver, pedestrian and cyclist environment would provide cohesion and create space for new and expanded buildings for Drexel University.

SOM added that the project would create "Philadelphia’s next great neighborhood".
