Stantec buys New Zealand engineer

Canadian consultant Stantec has bought the Cosgroves, a building engineering company based in Auckland that employs 90 staff.

Stantec says that the acquisition will increase its fire engineering, M&E, hydraulics, sustainability and civils expertise.

More specifically, it will support Stantec’s growth in healthcare, advanced manufacturing and data centre production.

Cosgroves carried out repair and refurbishment works following the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 and has also worked on Rutherford Regional Science and Innovation Centre, Invercargill Central and Manukau Health Park.

Gord Johnston, Stantec’s president, said: “Cosgroves is a highly respected technical firm and bringing them onboard will diversify our offerings and reinforce our position amongst the top-ranked firms in New Zealand.

“Our two firms have shared values and a history of working together, and our complementary strengths will support our strategic plan in a key region we’ve identified as a core area for growth.”

The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The acquisition will grow Stantec’s staff in New Zealand by 10%, to more than 900.

Stantec says that both New Zealand’s public and private sectors will grow in the coming years, citing Increased healthcare funding and the need to futureproof essential services.

Stantec is also expecting growth in the country’s water, transportation, and government sectors and has acquired Cardno, Traffic Design Group, and MWH.
