Swiss firm awarded $150m contract to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s power grid

Zürich-based engineering giant ABB has won orders worth around $150m from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).

ABB will expand five existing substations, helping to prepare the country’s transmission system for a 50% increase in power generation, needed to accommodate expected growth in the economy.

Saudi Arabia is planning to boost generating capacity from less than 60 gigawatts (GW) to about 91 GW by 2020.

ABB has several projects in the country, including a $60m order booked in the second quarter from SEC for 65 power transformers.

The extension orders include design, supply, installation and commissioning of new switchgear bays at five existing transmission substations as well as modification of associated automation, control, protection and auxiliary power supply systems and connected transmission substations.
