Tesla registers a construction firm in China. Why?

The electric-car and battery maker Tesla Inc has registered a construction company in China, according to a business registration filing seen by the Reuters news agency.

The business, wholly-owned by Elon Musk’s California-headquartered company, is registered in Shanghai with capital given as $1m, Reuters learned from China’s National Enterprise Information Publicity System.

The document said its scope includes architectural design, construction and building materials, with its legal representative named as Zhu Xiaotong, who is Tesla’s boss in China.

Reuters observed that the purpose of the construction company was unclear, and said Tesla had not responded to its request for comment.

Tesla has built a $2bn electric-car factory in Shanghai, with car production expected to begin this month, reports Reuters separately.
