New York-headquartered Turner Construction Company has given every employee access to AI tool ChatGPT Enterprise in an agreement with OpenAI, the company founded in 2015 that unveiled ChatGPT in November 2022.

It said ChatGPT Enterprise was one of several AI tools “helping teams work smarter, make faster decisions, and unlock new opportunities across projects”.

Turner employees have so far created more than 400 customised AI applications for streamlining contract reviews, enhancing safety protocols, and evaluating design and constructability options.

The company said the initiative had unlocked 70,000 hours worth of annual productivity gains.

Examples include AI-powered assistants, photo-analysis tools that strengthen site safety and planning, and digital tracking systems.

“Turner is committed to equipping our people with the tools, skills, and confidence to solve challenges and transform how they work,” said Jim Barrett, vice president and chief innovation officer.

Furthermore, at the end of October, Turner Ventures unveiled a collaboration with change-order software start-up Clearstory to make the latter’s cloud-based platform available to its project teams to digitise the traditionally manual workflows of tracking, documenting, and reconciling change orders.

Turner Ventures is the company’s corporate investment programme set up to back start-ups developing technology to improve construction productivity.

“Innovation at Turner is people-centric, helping people make progress in their work by reducing friction so they can focus on what truly matters,” said Jim Barrett.
