Tutor Perini named low bidder for $478m LAX Airport Metro Connector Project

New York-listed contractor Tutor Perini has been named low bidder for the Airport Metro Connector Project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority ("Metro"), Tutor Perini said Monday.

With an anticipated contract value of approximately $478m, the work includes building a major new transit station hub connecting the Metro Crenshaw/LAX and Green rail lines and a number of bus routes with the LAX Automated People Mover.

Work is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2021 with substantial completion targeted for the first quarter of 2025.

The company anticipates booking the contract value into backlog in the first quarter of 2021.

In all, six firms met the minimum qualifications for bidding:

  • Clark Construction Group
  • Dragados USA, Inc.
  • Hensel Phelps Construction Company
  • OHL NA – Suffolk Joint Venture
  • Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc.
  • Tutor Perini Corporation

Planned since 2014, the Connector project aims to provide a better connection for passengers traveling between LAX and regional bus and rail transit.

It includes a large light rail station, bus plaza, a direct connection to the future People Mover and other features.

The Automated People Mover is an electric train system on a 2.25-mile elevated guideway with six stations, three inside the Central Terminal Area and three outside. 

LAX broke ground on the this project in March 2019 and anticipates it being operational in 2023.
