A collapsing bridge girder has killed two construction workers and injured another six in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture, 80km southwest of Tokyo.

The accident occurred when a 65m-long girder, which was to have formed the foundation of an elevated road, slipped from a raised platform and fell some 9m.

The two who died were men in their fifties; of the injured, four are in a serious condition, according to Japan Today.

Work on the multi-level bypass was taking place at 3:10am in Shizuoka’s Shimizu Ward, and according to news agency Xinhua, 30 staff were involved in moving the girder.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident.
