Vinci’s first U.S. PPP opens

French construction giant Vinci has opened its first PPP motorway in the US.

The 12km portion of the East End Crossing will connect the states of Indiana and Kentucky. It includes a 762m-long cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River with two diamond-shaped piers and a 512m dual-tube tunnel on the Kentucky side.

The consortium, led by Vinci Highways, will be responsible for operation and maintenance of a major portion of the road for a period of 35 years.

The project was carried out under a contract with a value of nearly $1bn, and the consortium will be remunerated using "availability-based fees".

The opening of the motorway to the public marks the end of four years of design and construction work carried out by a joint venture made up of Walsh Construction and Vinci Grands Projects.
