Italy’s Webuild has won a €509m design and build contract through its US subsidiary Lane Construction to expand and modernise a segment of the Interstate 4 in Florida.

Working on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Lane Construction will expand a 5km section to four general-use lanes and two express lanes in each direction where the I-4 meets State Road 429 in order to ease congestion and improve emergency evacuation routes.

Lane Construction describes the widening of the Old Lake Wilson Road as a delicate job, expanding the connecting road into a corridor with protected sidewalks and bike lanes.

The I-4 median will also be prepared to accommodate a potential future rail corridor.

Called “Moving I-4 Forward – Project 2”, the expansion will cater to visitors to Florida’s Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld, plus growing communities.

Work will be undertaken at an accelerated schedule.

The project is part of the FDOT’s “Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative,” aiming to adapt the road network to match regional growth. This includes adding two express lanes in each direction along the I-4 between Polk and Orange counties.
