A team of SPC Construction and Lane Construction, the US subsidiary of Italy’s Webuild, has completed work on the Unionport Bridge, which spans the Westchester Creek in the Bronx.
The new $232m bridge replaces the original 1950s-era structure and contains two side-by-side, single-leaf bascule spans, each with three lanes of traffic and a dedicated pedestrian walkway and bike lane.
The bridge is connected to arteries such as the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway and Hutchinson River Parkway.
The team has installed mechanical and electrical systems for bridge lifts and safe marine navigation, plus lighting, signage and safety systems for increased visibility.
The Unionport Bridge has a 75-year life span.
