Malaysia unveils route of new $13bn railway

The government of Malaysia on 8 March unveiled the proposed route for the Chinese-financed 600km-long East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) for public feedback.

Malaysians have three months to comment on the proposal.

The $13.1bn plan calls for 23 stations starting at Port Klang on the west coast near Kuala Lumpur to be strung along a railway that crosses peninsular Malaysia and links the northeastern states, ending at Kelantan near the Thai border.

Intended to accelerate economic development, the ECRL will cut the journey time between the two termini from a 12-hour drive to a four-hour train ride when complete in 2024.

A framework finance deal and construction agreement was signed in November 2016, with state-owned China Construction Communications Company named as the builder.
