Aecom signs agreement with Japanese firm for Asian infrastructure projects

Los Angeles-based construction giant Aecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese consultant engineer Oriental Consultants Global (OCG) in a bid to win contracts across Asia.

The team is targeting "social, environmental and transit infrastructure" jobs, and hopes to win roles on the "largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the region", according to a press release.

Sean Chiao, Aecom Asia Pacific president, said: "As Japan continues to increase its support for infrastructure development across the Asia region, the strategic partnership formed by Aecom and OCG will bring together our respective expertise, experience and insights to fulfil the transformational and often extremely complex projects that are being envisioned.

"Our joint business plan includes formalising mutual growth objectives aligned with the US-Japan partnership for infrastructure investment in third countries." This is a reference to a 2018 initiative launched by the US government, aiming at improving infrastructure across Asia and competing with China’s Belt and Road initiative.

Saito Hiroshi, Aecom’s head of Japanese investment, said: "Since the US-Japan partnership, there has been a significant increase in overseas investment by Japanese public and private organisations.

"In partnership with OCG, we are well-suited to help high-growth nations across Asia create safer, cleaner and more connected communities."

Last month Aecom announced it would cease activities in 30 countries to improve profits and lower risks.
